Fractional Laser Resurfacing Questions
What is a fractional laser skin treatment?
Fractional laser treatments are a new technology that successfully corrects many dermatological and cosmetic skin conditions. The procedure is particularly effective for resurfacing concerns such as scars, superficial lesions, skin tags and keratosea. The results are produced with safety, comfort and minimum post treatment care.
How does fractional skin resurfacing work?
The treatments create narrow, deep columns into the dermis layer using an array of focused laser micro beams. The body’s natural healing process creates new, healthy tissue to replace the columns of affected tissue – improving the skin being treated.
How do fractional treatments differ from traditional laser skin treatments?
Traditional full surface laser skin treatments use a beam, passing over the entire area, vaporizing the top layer of skin. The damage to the tissue can be extensive and requires time to heal.
What are the benefits of fractional laser skin treatments?
Fractional laser treatments have three significant benefits. Increased comfort – the fractional arrays cause small areas to be affected surrounded by unaffected tissue. This gentler treatment means that patients opt for only light topical anesthetic. Decreased downtime – most patients return to daily activity almost immediately or within 2 – 4 days. Increased safety – each treated area regrows tissue and closes within one day safeguarding against pigmentation changes, scarring or infections.
Will it hurt?
Fractional treatments are described as a mild “sting”, not unlike a sunburn. Usually, the patient has a topical anesthetic applied to the treatment area 30 – 45 minutes before the treatment.
What should I expect after the treatment?
Immediately following the treatment, you may experience some mild redness and swelling. These effects are normal and indicate a successful treatment. The swelling subsides within 24 hours and the redness dissipates over a few days. Occasionally, light superficial bleeding or oozing may occur.
What precautions should I take following the treatment?
Cool, moist compresses should be immediately applied to the treatment area. This will calm and soothe the skin. A post care kit will be supplied to provide moisturizing to the skin. A gentle cleanser may be used to clear and assist in exfoliation as the new tissue is growing. SPF 30 or greater should be applied regularly for two weeks following the procedure. Be certain to consult your technician for specific information.
How many treatments will I need?
For wrinkles and sun damage generally one treatment is needed. For more severe case, 2 treatments may be recommended. Scarring will require 2 to 3 treatments.
